About “Blue Bayou”

Paintings of mine are often inspired by music, lyrics, songs and symphonies. This painting was one of the intuitive abstract paintings I created in my home studio in Sarasota, Florida, shortly after relocating to the region. I was affected by the colors of the gulf turquoise water and the indigo blue sky which often meld together at the horizon line. Nearing the end of the making of this particular painting all I could hear in my head was a familiar voice from my childhood,

“I’m going back someday
Come what may
To Blue Bayou
Where the folks are fun
And the world is mine
On Blue Bayou
Where those fishing boats
With their sails afloat
If I could only see
That familiar sunrise
Through sleepy eyes
How happy I’d be,’

lyrics from the song “Blue Bayou,” by Linda Ronstadt. I would listen to this song on my parent’s record player in the 1970’s as a child at full volume, yelling out the lyrics like a love lost old maid. Im sure my parents were always shaking their heads. And by the way, I can never carry a tune, which is why I always carry a paint brush.

Anyway, that’s the where and why of this painting. Whenever I see the painting now, that song starts playing in my brain for better or for worse.
