Artist Statement 2020
“Painting is a deeply personal process of exorcising the subconscious,” Laurie Maves states. “Specifically the Mixed Media Series ‘Prayers for 2020,’ for me is not only a necessary process that supports continued mental health, it helps me visualize my own spirituality, as well as define a space for prayer and meditation.” Maves’ larger than life paintings constantly explore a revolving communication of intuitive information, with themes of mortality’s intersection with divinity. Visually reminiscent of a possible zen marriage of Joan Mitchell and Cy Twombly, her large scale mixed media works transmit a cryptic sort of language via fields of color and mark making of varied spontaneity, size, and frequency. Her free form application of oil and acrylic paints, oil and chalk pastels, china markers and graphite, allows for the development of an oftentimes raw yet authentic dialogue of the collective unconscious. The viewer is left to translate and be immersed in the fields she creates.
This work in progress (Big Yellow Painting) video is demonstrative of not only the work in the moment of December 2019, it also reflects the vulnerability experienced during intuitive painting, unknowingly, yet blindly trusting the process that is unfolding.
